Nairobi, 30 April 2020 – The African Virtual University (AVU) has won the Education Research in Africa Award (ERAA), Category 4 on Enabling Institutional Environment for Educational Research. Launched in September 2018, the third edition of the Education Research in Africa Award was completed on 29th April 2020 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.  

Organized by the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) and the African Development Institute (ECAD) of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), with financial support from the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC), ERAA aims to promote high-quality education research, produced by African universities, research centers, and research networks. This prize is awarded to a public/non-profit African institution in recognition for its leadership and ability to promote and sustain production and dissemination of quality and relevant research in education, training or capacity building.  For more information on the award, please visit

The African Virtual University was acknowledged for achieving remarkable success providing an enabling environment for Education Research across Africa.  The AVU opened the Center for Virtual Education Innovation in 2014 and launched its annual international conference series the same year. The AVU also launched  the Journal for Research in Open Distance and eLearning (JRODeL) in 2017 and published a number of policy briefs available at The above activities were funded by the AfDB as part of the AVU Multinational Project II.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, we reiterate our commitment to increase access to high quality tertiary and continuing education and will endeavor  to contribute to quality educational research.”

This is the sixth international prize awarded to AVU since 2011.  Other previous Awards include the Open Education Global Leadership Award for Open Education Excellence 2017; the International Council for Distance Education (ICDE) Institutional Prize for Excellence 2015; Two prizes were awarded by Education a US based institution in 2011 and 2012, and one by the Open Education Global in 2013.
